It isn't Paris but.....

Port Melbourne - home for now

It seems we should change the name of the blog - since we are on the other side of the world - however, we will wait to let the new environment convince us of it's merits first.  After returning from Paris the end of December, we managed several weeks visiting family and friends ( ok - and Ottawa for Richard ).  We 'discovered' Asissippi - a decent prairie ski resort, and found that Winnipeg is a far better place to antique shop than Pairs if one wants value for their money.  We also experienced the developing personalities of our granddaughters - Kara and Gord's 'force of nature', and Eric and Randi's 'magical sleeping baby'.  What treasures.

Grandpa Richard & Kylie - a Habs tradition

We arrived in Melbourne this past Wednesday, losing a day of our lives somewhere along the way ( rumour has it we gain it back the end of April).  We were on the milk run - five airports to get here - and missed a connection in Denver....our fault....but somehow the airline assumed it was theirs and upgraded us ( well - to economy plus, which really only means extra leg room - but well worth it for Richard).  We took it in stride.

typical architecture
We have just begun to explore Melbourne.  We live a block off the beach in 'Port Melbourne', but are only a 45 minute walk to the heart of downtown.  The architecture is different but definitely interesting, and there is something to be said for sunlight from 5 a.m until 9 p.m.   The beach stretches for miles - or kilometres beyond our corner.  I have been assured the likelihood of stumbling across sharks is virtually non-existant...hope they are right.  What a luxury - a morning swim every day in warm water...and wonderful fine sand.

our home - and yes - it was a brewery in a former life

Beach - one block from our door
The location really is fantastic - close enough to walk to downtown and markets, but also right at the beach - almost feels like a vacation!!!!
and the beach goes on - and on -and on

another 1890's building - former hotel
We also managed to take in a day of the Australian Open - one of the Big Four in tennis.  The day we were there we managed to watch the umber 1 rank female, number 2 male - Roger Federer, and saw Venus Williams.....not bad overall.  It was well over 40 C at court level, but we managed to be in seats that were shaded for a good part of the day.
Roger Federer - nice swing

We are busy catching up on studies/reports etc right now, but are looking forward to lots of touring and adventure in the near future - stay posted for roos, wombats, shark attacks.....and wine tasting.
More to come from down under.
